LeFRAK CITY, QUEENS, N.Y. has given the game of basketball NBA players, top-tier college players and noted street legends. Next up is 2022 City Champion, YAHMANI McKAYLE, one of the top lady ballers in N.Y.C.
The 11th grade Point-God is an essential part of the unstoppable SouthShore High School Lady Vikings. Led by Coach Anwar Gladden, this squad cleared the board in 2021-2022 winning the PSAL City Championship at the Barclay’s Center and major NYC summer tournaments GERSH PARK, LINCOLN PARK, TRI-STATE, CONRAD McRAE, WEST 4th and the NY VS NY Championship at Holcombe Rucker Park.
MANI has been infatuated with the game of basketball since she could walk. She developed her skills playing with her friends every day on LeFrak City’s section 5 basketball court. “I love basketball and I really love competing! My confidence in what I am able to do on the court makes it fun to play against other great ballers. That’s why my favorite player is Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors. He plays with so much confidence. He believes in himself and especially in his shot. No matter who he’s up against, he’s cool on the court and gets it done.”, she says.
MANI’s game, like CURRY’s, consists of elite ball-handling and a mean jumper! Her high court IQ puts her at the top of the class. Balancing footwork and fundamentals, she impacts both sides of the court. She is a premier defender and an incredible scorer who runs through the opposition’s defense with ease. A silent assassin, her quiet demeanor earned her the nickname “No Smile“. On any given game day, Dave “Cha-Ching“ Teel, the voice of NYC street ball, can be heard shouting, “She don’t smile, she don’t laugh, she don’t talk…her name is MANI!“
In addition to the all of the tournament trophies she racked up during the 2021-2022 season, MANI earned an extra piece of hardware being crowned DEFENSIVE PLAYER of the YEAR. Congratulations MS. McKAYLE! We applaud all that you’ve accomplished, yet we know this is only the beginning. We’re looking forward to watching the remarkable plays you will make on the court this year.
